What is a conscious business?

A conscious business puts doing good, in some form, as equally important to delivering shareholder returns or owner/ partner wealth creation.  Doing good means different things to different businesses, and this is where the true purpose of the business comes from.  Your true business purpose and where you do good are aligned, complemented or even one and the same thing.

But having a clear purpose for doing good isn't sufficient if your work practices, leadership styles, and culture are pulling in an opposite direction.

A conscious business, and conscious leaders, are keenly aware of the bigger picture, the larger ecosphere in which they operate.  This includes an awareness of the needs of all stakeholders (employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, competitors, partners, community, governing and regulatory bodies, unions etc).  A business is only as conscious as its leaders are, so helping leaders to become more aware of their own interconnectedness is often a good place to start.  Click here for more on how to develop leadership consciousness.

Many organisations already do lots of good work in some of these areas, you may be doing conscious practises already without recognising them as such.  The challenge is how to do more, how to expand to more areas of the organisation and fully embed it in the DNA.
